Winner of the Dale McCaskill, Sr. Memorial Scholarship is Alexis Kannewurf, affiliated with WSA Member, Illinois-based KLM Commercial Sweeping, Inc. In high school, Alexis was ranked in the top 10% of her class, with a 3.839/4.0 GPA. Her educational goal in college is a degree in Animal Science. Her references said, among other great tidbits, Alexis was “not only a hard worker but also always there to help others in need… and, I appreciated her integrity and work ethic in some very difficult classes.”
Alexis’ essay for the Scholarship, which she wrote, in part, in response to the question “If you could go back in time and make a change, what would that be,” was both thoughtful and very insightful.
Alexis is not only a hard worker but is always there to help others in need. She was always willing to help other students in class when they had trouble with content or labs. She was always respectful to me, as well as other teachers and students. She always greeted me with a smile and a ‘Hello.”’ I appreciated her integrity and work ethic in some very difficult classes and would highly recommend her for your program.”
Some of the involvement Alexis had included assisting other students with social studies via Rho Kappa (social services honor society); tutoring through National Honor Society; assisting students with science-related work through Beta Chi Phi (science honor society); assisting other students with English-related work through English Honor Society; and, did community service and planned events celebrating French culture through the French Honor Society.
In addition, at KLM Commercial Sweeping she worked assisting with technology and paperwork; vehicle delivery and pickup; and, sanitizing work stations and materials. She also worked several hours per week caring for horses, cleaning stalls, feeding, etc., as an employee at CW Equestrian Center. We wish her well as she starts her college career at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Kyle is the son of Bruce Christianson, the Operations Manager at Pro Sweep. Kyle’s application was unusual in that he has been out of high school for over a decade. He did attend North Dakota State University in 2012, during which he was on the Dean’s List.
More recently, Kyle has been working at Chase Bank while also interning at Fremstad Law. Now, although Kyle is married with two children (wife, Amy, along with son, Tatum, and daughter, Emelia). Kyle has decided he wants to become an attorney and is going back to college at Mitchell Hamline School of Law with the goal of gaining his law degree.
We wish Kyle well in that endeavor and are glad WSA can assist someone who now has a mortgage and daycare — as well as the expenses seen by recent high school graduates — via a $2,000 stipend courtesy of the Carl J. Austin Memorial Scholarship.
